Just questioning out loud:

Why is it when you are female and you tell someone you shaved your head, they assume you're mentally ill?!?! Okay, so I do have a history of mental illness, and I did do a sorta botched job at shaving my head...awaiting some clippers to finished the job tomorrow... but I swear I'm fine. This was not impulse, it was something I've wanted to do for 15 years...and just finally had the guts to do it. I am a little bit thrilled and a little bit mortified... I'm sure I'll have a more solid reaction when I don't look like a patch-work quilt met with a weed whacker. It's hair. It'll grow back. Still I'm nearly 30 and cannot bring myself to face the general public or my parents. My mom would die. And maybe, knowing that, a small part of me is dying too... or maybe I just did it to spite her. I dunno. I love my mom but really I think there's only so many things you can be told not to do before you start doing them anyway.

And no, don't ask for pictures... at least not yet... I never liked putting pictures up before... that's not going to change now. The one above will have to do. LOL

Litter Locker II Review

As mentioned in my previous post I purchased a Litter Locker II and said I planned to do a review on it. Now that I've had time to use it and the Christmas holiday festivities have started to slow down I actually have a chance to write it.

Overall I am happy with the Litter Locker II. I did find out that $10 is a pretty common sale price for this item so maybe the deal wasn't as good as I thought but either way for $10 it's not bad. It's easy to assemble, the picture directions are very clear, and I had no trouble or confusion in that area. I would like to see it offered in different colours as with a black cat I find that her fur static clings to it and is very noticeable.

There are a couple things I would change personally but it's more just cosmetic. I would like if it had a foot step to open the lid instead of the lift top...but it's not really a big deal. One thing I did notice though, is that if the litter box is particularly full there's not enough room in the compartment for all the litter clumps so if you have more then one kitty I'd recommend cleaning your litter at least twice a day. I have one kitty and change litter usually every day and occasionally run into that issues.

Overall, I am happy with the product and it does keep things smelling better as I only smell the poop when it's in the litter box, not once it's in the locker (unless you lift the lid just after pulling out the handle).

I just realized I don't have a picture of the Litter Locker II assembled, sorry about that. In the picture above you can see everything that it comes with. The instructions at the very bottom of the picture. You can see the scoop on the left and beside that is a nifty little pocket that attaches to the Litter Locker II to put the scoop in. You can put it on either side so whatever is more convenient for you. On the top of the Litter Locker II is the one of the main parts of the device. It contains the "bag" that the litter goes into. I haven't had to buy a refill yet but they seem to be around the $10 mark as well.

Overall it is a good product and I am happy with it and if you live in a small apartment like me it is great. I used to hate opening the garbage bin in the bathroom to put the stinky litter in because it always reminded me of a diaper pail full of dirty diapers and that smell would go through the apartment. This eliminates that. Now if only I could find a solution to the stinky fresh poo right after my cat goes to the litter and before it goes into the Litter Locker II I'd be all set.

Shopping Surprises

I was out getting some errands done with mom and ended up doing a little shopping and a little browsing, mostly just checking prices of items to get an idea. My main item in mind was cat claw clippers...but didn't have much luck finding a pair that I was happy with on any of the shelves at any of the places we went. However, I did find a total deal that I was not expecting at all!

We stopped into Petcetera and I was meandering down each aisle as that is what I typically do there. I love to look at everything for every critter...but now that I'm a cat momma I am a bit more focused on kitty items. :) I got to the cat section and saw these BIG yellow tags and the item they are by is the "Litter Locker II". Eh, no big deal some of you might say...well honestly I don't know...I haven't used one before. But not long after I got Ebby I mentioned to my sister half joking that I needed something like a Diaper Genie but for cat litter. She said there is such a thing and we left it at that.

Back to the BIG yellow tags! On them had in big numbers $10! I'm thinking...oh yeah...you probably save $10 off the regular price...but on closer look...that was the actually selling price! Regular price.... $32.99! So I grabbed one and carried it around because hello...I would SAVE $22.99!!! How awesome is that!!!

One happy momma right here :D Now to go test this thing out, haha, we shall see.

Anyhow, I did take pictures but my computer isn't being too cooperative tonight and I'm kinda exhausted so I'll try to remember to post a pic and some links tomorrow. After a couple weeks I plan to do a bit of a practice review because...to be honest... I'd really like to start doing some product reviews for reals. I love to write, I love taking pictures, and I love giving my opinion and in blog land... that is something I can do!

If you have any thoughts or suggestions or experiences with product reviews please let me know...I want to learn as much about the process as I can. In a future post I'll be asking questions and possibly sending them to established review bloggers.

Slow

Okay, I admit it... till this point things have been a little...slow...errr....okay a lot slow here at this blog. It's been one heck of a bumpy road but I'm hoping to turn that around and have some new and exciting things start happening. One thing, I know there is going to be a whole lot more animal talk because with the fostering...and adopting (yes, I've adopted Ebony) animal rescue has become a huge passion of mine...even more then it was before!

I have such a big heart and big ideas and am stuck since I basically live on a low income. No sob story, just it is what it is and one day that will change but for now it's all part of life and learning and coping.

I want to come back to this blog and do some fun things with it and it still keep it my own. This is about life's journey's and whatever that might entail. There's going to up's and down's...times were I'm here frequently and times when life just has too many twists and turns that I just can't be here.

And let me tell you...that kitty in the picture there.... Miss Ebony Rose (Ebby)....she sure has added a new and very interesting twist to the journey....and I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

Just Because...

Tonight I'm writing, because I was reminded, of how therapeutic writing can be
Life is like a balance beam...one step too far ahead, you crash, one step back too far, you crash

How do you know the limits in between those too far ahead and too far back steps?
How do you know if the little things you do will end up being big thing that throws you for a loop?

It's unpredictable how life can change so much with the smallest step...either good or bad...
And to constantly live in it's balance...is a challenge...not easy at all...because what if you fall...

Falling is not good, but in some ways it's better then soaring...because at least you know what falling is like and where you'll land...
If you're soaring you may end up in unfamiliar territory, wishing you could go back, but forever stuck in a world you don't know...

How do you live, knowing that to better yourself, means you could lose the "self" that you know and potentially put you further behind then the first step forward ever should have
How do you live, knowing that to step backwards, mean you are not progressing and that your "self" is a disappointment to all those around

Everyone who actually cares...is ashamed of your state of being...you become the shame in the family...the weak link...yet you are the one, the only one, who cares what people think, and will try to blend into their lifestyle to fit in and not stand out like a sore thumb, too not shame those who you care about or potentially who care about you

Learning how to feel alive, how to live and grow, that is something I work on everyday, but I slip...and that's not allowed...so I remain silent...or talk to one of the few people who understands...or someone who I don't care if they approve or not...but family and close, close friends...they shall not know...for knowing brings shame...and shame brings hurt and loss...

And to lose those bloodlines, and those closest to me, is like someone ripping your heart out of your chest...and expecting you to still be able to live...impossible...

Fostering

I've been wanting to have a pet of my own for quite some time now but I'm still not ready to make the long term commitment of being owned by a cat, and to be honest, in some ways I'd rather a dog but the apartment I rent is cat friendly, no dogs allowed. I somehow came across an organization a little over a week ago and seeing they are in urgent need of fosters and adopters I inquired further on both. I was interested in both options but was (and still am a little) afraid of the part when I have to let my foster baby go. I know it will both break my heart and make me happy at the same time.

Anyway, I was left to ponder on it a few days and then received a call seeing if by chance I'd be interested in fostering one that they had at the vet and no home for it to go to. I couldn't stand the thought of it not having a home and decided I'd jump in and try out this fostering thing. I'm in love.

This is Miss Ebony Rose (fancy way of saying Black Rose). She is such a great little (approx) 5 month old girl. I love having her around. And I'm so glad I decided to open my home to her. Yeah, I'm gonna probably cry a little when she leaves here but that's okay. I can always open my home again to another one or I can decide not to.

If you've ever contemplated fostering, or are just thinking about it for the first time, and you are in a position to do so I highly recommend it. Cat's only need a small room, in my case I'm in a small bachelor apartment, and I was worried that it wouldn't be enough space...but keep in mind, cats in shelters often end up in small cages so even if can only offer a spare room, a warm porch, etc it is fine. All ya gotta do is make sure they have food, keep their litter clean (if you clean it once or twice a day it's really not so bad), and socialize with them...play, cuddle, whatever. Ebony likes being near me when I'm on the computer. She likes to play and can keep herself entertained but I play with her as well. Anyway, Ebony and I should be heading for bed...it's quite late here.

Looks like she beat me there...okay so this picture was from the first full day I had her here. You can see that her belly is shaved from having her surgery so can't have any babies. Such a precious gal...you'd think so too if you met her, if you don't already. Anyhow goodnight my blog world friends. Goodnight. From this very happy and tired foster mommy to a fur baby. :)

Wishmaker Walk for Wishes

Okay, so I haven't been written here in ages and suddenly I come back with a link to a sponsorship page: My Personal Page

You see I decided that on Sunday, October 16, 2011 I am going to walk in a local event called "Wishmaker Walk for Wishes". I have at least 3 reasons: a) I think it is a great cause, b) it's a personal challenge (I don't like being in groups of people, but I want to do this) and c) in memory of a girl I knew named Angela who was fortunate to receive her wish before she lost her battle with cancer.

Yay! I have internet and finally starting to feel caught up enough that I can start paying some more attention to this blog. Poor thing has been neglected for far too long.

Just a reminder, no matter what you are going through there is always hope. I know that was random and had nothing to do with me getting back on here but I just want you to know there is hope even when you feel there is none.

I never mentioned something nasty that I had picked up as a habit back a number of months ago (after about 5 years without)...smoking! Ewwww. Anyway, I can happily say that I've quit again. My last one was August 12 around noon Atlantic time so it's been 10 days! So happy!

In other news I am seriously considering getting a kitty...not sure yet if I will adopt through one of the local shelters or keep my eyes open on kijiji for one that isn't too old but is already fixed and needled. I don't mind if it's a few years...even though everyone else wants me to get a kitten.

Guess that's my word of the day, lol. I'm just having a random kind of day. Doing laundry and sitting at the computer for hours tends to make ya go a bit silly.

Dreams

One of my dreams has come true. I finally have my own apartment, no roommates! It's a bit of an adjustment and I've been having a hard time but am determined to make it work. It may be awhile before I have internet hooked up, aiming for September. I'm currently visiting my parents so I need to keep this short.

Things Learned

I was just taking a bit of a break from household duties when I came across a list of things doctors (nurses, and other medical personnel) learn from their various patients. They can be found at this blog.

1) Never, ever leave flashlights, beer bottles or any other long, circular object on the floor because someday you will fall on it… and it will somehow impale its way up your rectum.
2) Always do woodwork with your skillsaw before using meth.
3) White latex paint, despite being luxuriously thick and creamy, does not coat your stomach and provide relief like pepto bismol does.
4) If you have taken 7 home pregnancy tests, and they’re all positive, when you come into the emergency department… chances are our test will come back positive too.

Time Fly's

April 16th...when did that happen?!? I looked at something with today's date on it and thought it was "obviously" wrong...it couldn't be any later then the 8th or 9th could it?! Yeepers, where have I been because I sure don't know. *puzzled look*

A few things have been going on and I guess that's thrown me off. Living at the residential centre is rough at times...and I got to the point I was really slipping and going downhill into a depression and engaging some not very great coping methods. I decided I needed a break. A time away to try to review the situation and what my priorities are right now. I needed to step away...and it has helped. Thankfully staff at the centre were okay with me making this decision and I am still able to go back...and I will...probably tomorrow.

Time away has been great. I am getting back on track and will have some decisions to make but I can do it safely and in a more supportive way...I can make it my choice...and not go down the road of losing my housing again due to mental health and some of the not so great coping methods I have learned along life's journey.

The day I left, I was pretty close to getting kicked out of the centre, instead I talked to the staff and decided a time away would be beneficial. I didn't really want to come to my parents house, but in this case it was the best option. I've been able to start making healthy responsible choices again without a stay in the hospital. I decided I probably won't stick out the entire year there but I will try to finish at least the 6 months. I've decided buying a new laptop is no longer my top priority as far as "needs" go right now and am planning to use the savings towards a new living arrangement. I will attempt to make it to programs at the centre (which are mandatory but I struggle with attending), but I'm not going to stress myself out about them because that just means I will miss more. I will work with my case worker at options for housing and start with the applications. There are still supportive living options, and for a reduced rent (30% of income) so I will apply to those. It may not be ideal but for were I am in life right now that is my best option for the near future. Still my time at the Centre hasn't been a waste...I've learned things about myself, and it is a great program, it just isn't for everyone. I gave it a try. I will continue to try for a while to come...just not for as long as I originally intended. It's not worth losing my sanity over. I've paid off some of my debt and put money into savings and go to dental appointments. When I move I'll probably have to stop paying on my student loans again, and money will be tighter, especially if I don't crawl out of the credit card debt soon...but I'm almost there.

So, that means, in the next few months I will be looking at moving AGAIN which will make 6 times in less then 1 year. Yikes! And none of what I said above was what I was planning to talk about in my blog today, but I guess that's where I've been...in my mind...battling positive vs negative, healthy vs unhealthy, etc.

Hi, me again. Sorry for the long-ish intervals between posts. That last post really was random and until just a few minutes ago I didn't know I had even written. Man, that depression stinks. A few days after that was written I ended up in hospital and medication adjustments were made. I'm getting back on track now and feeling more positive then I had in awhile. The side effects from the medication adjustments are also easing up, feel so much better physically then I had during this period of time. I had a bad headache that lasted 1 week...affecting my vision, ability to stand, and just about everything else...and no appetite (that sucks for a foodie lover like me). Things are much better now, though I'm not back into the swing of things 100%.

In other news, a few days ago I brought my newly reformatted old laptop back to the residential facility with me and have internet access on it....so I might possibly be able to start posting again with a little more regularity as long as it doesn't get in the way of me getting things done that need to be done. I've been missing it here in blog-land and am right now trying to catch up on blogs I haven't read in awhile.

Things are going well all in all and I'm looking forward to the days to come.

I'm still at the residential facility. Am hoping to stick it out until January 2012...but I don't know. I am having a really hard time and feeling really depressed...and not having good thoughts. But aside from that side of things...I'm okay.

I like my unit-mates here. I like the programs, mostly. I'm just a little stuck right now.

Hey...I probably won't be posting much for awhile. Things have changed so much since the new year started. I lost my housing, ended up in emergency homeless shelters and am now living in a residential facility for women...and using a shared public computer. I have mandatory programs and various things that need to be done and I don't really come on the computer much. So many filters and things I can't even watch most youtube video's or see half my blog page and checking emails takes forever. *sigh* Hope things get better...but it will be at least 6 months to 1 year before I leave here unless I mess things up.

Sorry I've been away. I went through a bit of a personal crisis and in some ways am still struggling with it a bit. I'm hoping to be back at least a bit and I am planning to enter some different blog contests around the web so I'll be posting entries here for extra entries in those. I may finish the All About Me challenge but probably not until in the new year. Things are just way too chaotic right now and I need to just focus on getting through Christmas and all the festivities in one piece.

Sorry I'm not doing quite so well at posting daily, but I think every other day is working a little better for me now that I'm over whatever nasty bug I had and am getting back to a semi-normal routine...or lack of one. *shrugs*

I wish I could get my hair to look like this again. First it has to grow out some.

I think I'm OCD about trying to figure out what I am OCD about...lol. Seriously, I think I've been thinking for the past hour and I'm not kidding. Sure I do have things I'm OCD about from time to time...but for the life of me I can't think of any of them. So what am I OCD about?

All About Me Day 9 & Day 10

Opps, I didn't get here yesterday...I didn't forget I just wasn't able to get on. So I'm going to make up for it today.

Day 9 is a photo you took. I have lots of pictures I've taken as photography is a hobby of mine...even though I really don't know what I'm doing. I wanted to make sure that the one I share here is of something important to me. So here it is:

Meet Mandie! <3 I have two cats that mean a lot to me...unfortunately they don't live with me but with my parents which is better for my girls. They get much better care and a more stable environment. Mandie is about 16 years old now. She's a pretty laid-back girl as long as you leave her alone...otherwise she's a bit of a "psychokitty".

Day 10 is a photo taken over 10 years ago of you. Up until now I'm pretty sure I've been pretty careful to not show any pictures showing my face...but today I'm going to show myself.

I'm not sure if you can read the writing on the bottom of the picture but this was taken back in 1988 when I was 6 years old. Yes, that is a real live leopard...at least I think it's a leopard...it's a real cat anyway. Unfortunately, I believe they probably would drug the animal to make it docile enough for kids (and adults) to get a picture with it but I wouldn't have known that at the time.

Day 8 of All About Me

A photo that makes you angry/sad is the theme for today. I actually couldn't think of what I'd possibly use for today's photo so I looked and looked...and came across a few things but nothing I was willing to use here on my blog. I ended up searching through past photo's I had posted to facebook and came across one from a few years ago from a geocaching run I did.

It's in a cemetery and is the grave of a young girl, Sophia L, who passed away in September 1879 (yes 1879) at the age of 14 years. The gravestone says "Falsely Accused She Died of a Broken Heart". There is a whole write up at the gravesite but I can't remember exactly how the story went...other then it is a sad sad story.

All About Me Day 4

It's day 4 and I'm still posting...haha...that's pretty good considering my track record the last however many months, I hope this is a sign of things to come. I would like to be writing here on at least a semi-regular basis.

I love to read. I don't do it nearly enough. I think as a kid and young teenager I read myself silly...seriously...I used to get in trouble for reading too much. Not too many people I know can say that. Once I got into my teens and since then I've had a hard time reading. It's hard for me to find books that I enjoy...once I find one that I like I'm glued to it until I've finished it...but there are still less then a handful of books I can truly say are favorites.

There's is a book though that has helped me like no other and that I've recommended to friends and they have said the same thing after reading it. That book is called Life is Tough, But God is Faithful and it's written by Sheila Walsh.

I have to say...while I still don't like the hard times this book has helped me to appreciate even those times and look at them in a different light.

Day 3 of All About Me

Today is Day 3 in the All About Me challenge and the topic is favorite television program.

I tend not to watch a lot of tv...but now that I've moved and have access to cable I admit I do often have it on even if it's just for background noise. There are a few shows that I like to watch if I have the opportunity but nothing that the world will end over if I don't see. There is one show that I consistently love to watch though. It usually will bring me through a wide range of emotions during the one hour it is on. I genuinely feel for each family featured on the show and want desperately to be able to help families in some way even just a fraction as much as this group does. The show that I would say is my favorite television program is:

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition!

I just absolutely love it...I find it inspirational and heartbreaking, and heartwarming, and just plain awesome. And there's some nice eye candy as well. :P

I love seeing how a community can come together and do so much for other members of their community. I don't think it just helps the family...I think it helps every single individual involved in each project. I know, just watching it, helps motivate me to help others around me.

Day 2 of All About Me

All About Me

I haven't really made any headway on the pillowcase dresses. I haven't forgotten about them, I've just been busy with other things and haven't been able to try out my hand at making them.

The move went well overall and we've all been settling in. I've been away at my parents though for the past week. The cat's didn't make the move, well not with us anyway...they moved in with a new furever family and that really is what is best...they wouldn't be happy in the small little basement apartment. There's also now 2 dogs, not 1. They live upstairs mostly. And remember how I said I had no bedroom...well my bedroom is what was a storage closet. It's small, but cozy...and I think when I get it all organized and figured out it will be okay. I had to get a portable wardrobe to put along the wall outside of my bedroom since I had no closet but it's all good.

Now...if I could just get rid of this cold...the 3rd one in 4 months....we'd be all set.

I came across a neat idea on another blog (Simply Stacy). It's a bit of a challenge called "All About Me in 30 Days." I'm way behind but thought it sounded fun so decided I'd unofficially take part anyway.

That is an easy one. How He Loves Us is pretty much my favorite song right now. It is written by John Mark MacMillan. I first heard it back in March or April at church but there are two versions I especially love. One is by Kim Walker-Smith and the other is by the David Crowder Band...it wrecks me nearly every time I stop to really listen to it. God's LOVE for US (that's YOU and me) is so amazing! Operation Projects

I haven't had too much worth writing about lately. I moved, I've been settling...and I'm moving again by the end of the month...into a home with 6 other people, a dog, and 2 cats...and as of now...I have no bedroom. But the Lord tells me not to worry, be anxious for nothing, and for once in my life I am listening. I feel strongly this is what I'm suppose to do right now...3 months ago I'm sure I wouldn't have said the same.

On another note, I have a couple project ideas that I feel the Lord is putting on my heart. One is to make pillow-case dresses for girls in Africa...I was inspired by this blog (We are THAT Family) here.

Aren't they adorable!? Picture above is from their Grand Total blog entry. There's a couple issues though...(of course, aren't there always)...I'm not a real comfortable sewer...I can get by when I'm just fixing a small hole in a piece of fabric...but I've never done anything that was for anyone else. The other problem...I don't own a sewing machine so I have no choice but to hand stitch. It's all good though, I'll give it a try as soon as I have a pillowcase to try it with. If that goes well I may attempt shorts as well. We shall see.

The other project I have in mind has to do with photography....I don't currently want to go into detail about that though. I am planning on starting to attend a photography club later this month.

Anyway, that's a bit of what's been on my mind lately. Hopefully I'll get into the habit of writing here again.

It's Not What It Appears

It appears I've been in a blogging funk and in reality I guess I have. I have never forgotten though. I'm still around, lurking, reading, thinking. I just haven't had really anything that I felt compelled to share.

I'm in a time of transition. I'm moving this week. In fact, most of my belongings have already moved. I'm laying on a piece of foam with a comforter over it...my bed for the next few nights. I'm not moving far, but where I am moving is already furnished, so all my items had to be moved into storage...at my parents. I fear they may decide to charge me a storage fee. I hope they let me pay them in hugs. :)

This move is bittersweet but I know God is in control and this is part of His plans. I'm going to miss being right in the city...well, at least the convenience of it all. My roommate of the last two years is already moved out. I miss her. I know I'll like my new roommate though too. She is a wonderful lady from my church, I'm also friends with her daughter. It's in the same city...sort of. It's kind of it's own little town but the way our city here is all of these towns and communities are all under one big amalgamated city. I'm going to miss the convenience of walking out my door and catching a bus without having to plan around it's schedule. I'm going to be bound by the schedule of the bus after I move. Maybe though, that will help me to plan more All Day trips and be more adventurous when I am in the city for appointments. I'll become slightly less spoiled too. :P

Lots of changes upcoming. Lots of transitioning to do. Lots of emotions. Lots of trying to have faith and trust. I know this is what He has planned as it's the only door that has remained open while others kept closing. I feel in some ways, because my stuff is being packed up and going back to my parents, like I am going to end up moving into a shelter. I've done it before. I know that's not the case but that's what I'm reminded of. It's a hard reality but not one of regret. I'm thankful for every experience no matter how rough the journey has been.

Anyway, lots of good, little bits of not-so-much good....but I am hopeful.

Have you ever been in a”Funk.?” You know that place right? Where you feel discouraged, burned out, stressed out & give out! Well, I know that place all to well, and it seems I visit that place more than I would like, and more often than I would care to admit. The question is not how to get there (we do that on our own quite well), but rather, how do we get “OUT OF HERE?” Well, having been there often enough I can speak with experience on some things that have helped me get out, after I fall in…

1. Don’t deny it. Face the truth of where you are, this helps you to turn your attention and thoughts to moving out of where you are. Denying it, will just prolong your escape!

2. Transform you thinking. Begin to tell yourself you are doing better, and feeling better. Words are powerful, so speak words that are true, but hopeful. One of the most powerful words is “yet.” I’m not there “yet”, but hope to be tomorrow!

3. Dig deep into God! Go back and look at some scripture God has given you in the past, and just speak it in the first person to yourself & pray it! Thank you God, “that you make me strong even when I am weak!”

4. Rally the prayer warriors! This is absolutely vital! You don’t want to go around telling everybody you aren’t feeling well. But, you must have a small group you can confide in, and ask them to stand with you in prayer!

5. Find a distraction. You need to change your environment, even if it’s for a short period of time. Get a break, go somewhere your mind can slow down, and you can think clearly, pray deeply & commune with God intimately.

6. Fake it ’till you feel it! This is powerful. I know it sounds funny, but there is great power & elements of faith when you begin to speak, and act like you are better before you “feel” better. Before long everything will catch up to what you are saying!

Yeah, not really sure what to put for a title today. I figure I should be at least somewhat honest about why I haven't been around lately. I've been having a real struggle with depression again the last while and it's making it hard for me to get the most basic of things done, let alone write on a blog. I even had a brief hospital admission a couple weeks ago, which did help get me out of "crisis mode" but still trying to get back into the normal swing of things. It seems I'm forever behind on reading blogs and emails and I just really am not sure what to talk about over here. This isn't the place I come to ramble on or vent about my mental health, I go to Daily Strength for that....and even there I'm having a hard time right now finding words to write. So, I just wanted to let you know I'm around, just in a bit of a funk...and will hopefully get back on track soon. Must work on day-to-day tasks a little more and living life in general but I am around even if I'm silent.

Swag Bucks, Amazon.ca, and My Fitness Coach for Wii

I've decided to take a week off from Thankful Thursdays and yes I know I'm posting this on a Friday...apparently I don't know my days of the week...lol.

You may be wondering, or not, how all the things in my title relate...and let me say...they do relate.

If you've been to various blogs and locations over the internet you have probably heard about SwagBucks. I know it seems like every 2nd or 3rd blog I read there is reference to it somewhere on the page.

I know that's how I found out about it. Someone, and I forget now who, had written a review and that got me curious. So I decided I'd check it out too. I haven't had the best of luck in the past with these kinds of sites so I was skeptical...however I was pleasantly surprised. It didn't take long at all to earn enough points to start redeeming for items. I've donated some of my bucks to various charities but I've also redeemed for quite a few $5 Amazon.ca gift cards as well. It only takes 450 Swagbucks (edited September 5, 2010 because of changes to swag bucks) to get a $5 gift card. You can redeem for Amazon.com as well as a host of other prizes. Anything from posters and trading cards, to gift cards, to electronics, and way more.

I saved up $20 worth and went to see what I could find. I ended up ordering My Fitness Coach for the Wii. I've been trying to increase my activity level but am not confident enough to go to the gym and really get annoyed with just walking so after looking at the reviews and comparing to a few other Wii fitness games I settled on this one. It was among the cheapest with the best reviews so I figured why not. I was able to stack my gift cards together and then put the last little bit (some tax and shipping costs of approximately $7) on my credit card. I could've waited until I earned another $5 card but I'm impatient like that.

It didn't take long at all to receive in the mail...and I surprised myself by checking it out that first day I got it. I've used it almost daily for about a month and have seen a good amount of progress. It takes about 30 minutes to set it up properly and that involves various fitness and flexibility tests as well as measuring your arms, chest, waist, hips, thighs, so that you can track your progress. You also have the option to use your own hand weights, step, stability ball, and heart rate monitor if you have one. I like a lot of the options that are provided and that there is a good amount of variety. I haven't been active much over the last few years so I find this to be a really good challenge, however if you are in pretty good shape you may find things too easy. I like that you can concentrate on different types of workouts but still keep with your long-term goals. You can do yoga, cardio, upper body, lower body, or flexibility. The only one I didn't care for is the yoga option because I found it more frustrating then relaxing to follow along. I also like that you can change your scenery and music based on how you feel. The only real con that I found with this is that if you are someone that has knee problems this probably wouldn't be the fitness game for you. The initial testing and progress checks involve jumping jacks and squats.

All in all though I'm really happy. I was able to get a great product, for almost free (would've been free if I had more patience) and all I had to do was do searches using SwagBucks instead of Google and had almost the same results.

Homemade and/or Baking Soda Toothpaste

I've heard a lot about the different uses for Baking Soda, especially for whitening teeth. I've also been using Arm and Hammer Toothpaste for awhile now but a little while back I came across a recipe for homemade toothpaste and we had the main ingredients in the house so I decided I'd give it a try. The blog I originally found the recipe on seems to no longer exist (A Dash Of Wife And A Pinch Of Motherhood) but I did find another blog that had it...over here.

Basically here is the recipe:
Mix together:
~2 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil
~3 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
~5 drops Peppermint Essential oil
~5 drops Spearmint Essential Oil
~a pinch of Stevia powder

I only had the first two ingredients here, the Coconut Oil and the Baking Soda, but decided to give it a try anyway with the knowledge it probably wasn't going to taste very good. Haha...I was right....I would definitely recommend using some Peppermint or Spearmint Essential Oil if you have it. I can't bring myself to use it every single time I brush but I've been alternating between that and the Arm and Hammer Baking Soda one that I was using anyway. Even with the limited use of the homemade toothpaste I am finding it makes a big difference...I probably use it every 2-3 days.

I used to always have problems with my gums bleeding and getting inflamed, I've noticed that doesn't seem to be an issue anymore, even when flossing afterwards it seems so much better. Also, my mom said to me that she thought my teeth looked whiter! She has been mentioning my yellow coffee stained teeth for awhile now and even went so far as to buy me whitening strips for Christmas. I tried the product once and couldn't even handle leaving it in my mouth for the recommended time, it was awful so I much prefer the homemade toothpaste option....even if it's not very good tasting without the oils...at least I can tolerate it and to me it seems like a far better option.

Have you tried any homemade toothpaste recipes? Or any other homemade recipes for common every day products? What was your experience?

I'm know I'm definitely interested in learning more about simple homemade alternatives that are both inexpensive and natural.

Thankful Thursday

Wow, it's already Thursday again. When did that happen? lol Guess that means I need to think of a few things I'm thankful for. January 21, 2010...like seriously...wasn't it just 2000 like a month ago? LOL. How did 10 years go by.

I'm thankful for parents who are willing to do whatever they can to help me get out of a stressful situation
I'm thankful for family, both immediate and extended...and that includes my "adopted" family (close friends) and all the family furkids.
I'm thankful that my parents wanted to drive me back to my apartment tonight so I didn't have to bus in the cold
I'm thankful for a roof over my head (even if this apartment seems to be falling apart)
I'm thankful for phone, internet, and tv...these things really are luxuries when you look at some of the rest of the world
I'm thankful for prayer and a God that listens
I'm thankful for live music...K and her friend M had a jam session last night...that means I get to listen to live music right in my living room...it was awesome
I'm thankful for access to clean water and healthy food (even if I don't always choose the healthy options)

Truth be told I had a bit of a hard day today. Had an appointment with the bank to look at whether or not a loan is possible....she looked at my income and asked if I was serious, if that was really my income, and said she doesn't know how I do it. It was hard to look at the cold hard numbers, kinda depressing really, but still I'm thankful that I have any income at all. God truly does provide our necessities and I guess I'm going to have to continue to trust that He's got a plan and things will work out in His time. So hard though when we live in a world were so much revolves around money. I'm not complaining though...just venting a little frustration. I know things could be so much worse.

Makeover...errr...sorta

Okay...just tried to update my blog a little bit since it was a little stuck in the holidays and I wasn't really digging the background I recently changed to...so I did a little rearranging and I *think* I found a background that is ME. See the boots in my profile pic....it makes me think of those. :)

In real life I'm generally a pretty quiet person with moments of craziness. I love retro, bright, and unique, and I like to have my own style. Some days I'm pretty plain jane but other days I really stand out...in my uniqueness. I like to be creative and I like it to show...while still being tasteful. Hoping I don't end up on some "What Not to Wear" show one of these days but most people say that my style suits me and they like the things I pick out for myself. I just like to be fun.

I'm often overly serious and conservative, not because I want to be but because my inner child seems to have gotten trapped somewhere inside and that's one area I kinda relax in.

Okay...I have no idea where I was going with that...this was just suppose to be a quick post about my BLOG's slightly new look...not about my appearance....lol. Ah, I guess that's just me. I'm a little random sometimes. ;~)

I've been really feeling like I should start keeping track of some things I am thankful for in this blog. I'm going to attempt to commit to doing a list of a minimum of 3 things each Thursday but we'll see how it goes. I might mix up the days now and again.

Today, Thursday, January 14, 2010, I am thankful for:

a God who is faithful and provides
an income, however little it is being on disability
a roof over my head (even if it sometimes leaks)
the best roommate in the world
parents who love me and try to do their best for me (even though it often doesn't feel that way)
friends (mostly online but a few in real life)
a computer and internet access (can't forget that one)
access to healthcare
chocolate (it's a love/hate thing...hehe)
discounts and freebies - so many things I wouldn't be able to do or try if it wasn't for these

Alright, I'll stop there tonight. Next Thursday I might not be feeling quite so thankful, so I need to save a few just in case. Hehe.

Well, we're ONE week into the new year and time in one way seems like it's flying by and in another sense it seems to be going slow. Either way, I'm not complaining. This is the first year, in a LONG time, were the beginning of the year has been good for me and that I've enjoyed. Sure it's had it's share of ups and downs, already, but overall I'm just thankful and blessed for everything.

Although I must say the last 48 hours haven't been all that impressive to me...lol. I had to make an appointment to see the nurse at my medical clinic because of a possible gum infection. Normally I wouldn't bother but with the problems that I could encounter should I have an infection it's better to play safe. The nurse ended up getting the doctor to come in and it was decided that I should take antibiotics for 10 days as a precaution. Not real impressed but it beats the alternative should a full blown out infection happen. While there I also had a liquid nitrogen treatment on a stubborn plantars wart that just does not want to go away. And then before bed last night I tripped on the cord to my roommates laptop and pulled the laptop down and it landed right on the top of my foot. Ouch! But hey, at least I'm able to laugh about it. S**t happens...we can dwell on it and be all miserable or we can just shrug it off with a laugh and find the humor in the situation. I choose to go with the more positive option. :)

Today is a special day for me. This afternoon marks 1 year that I have been out of the hospital. That is a big deal for me since it is the first time since my first psychiatric hospital admission that I've been able to make it to a year. I thank God a lot for that. I know without Him I wouldn't be were I am today.

I don't normally talk about these things too much on this blog but I'm still unsure what direction this blog is going to take. I know I want it to be a fun, encouraging space for others but I'm clueless as to how to get it there. I got a little (okay A LOT) caught up in various blog contests, and that is fun and all, but not what I want this blog to be solely about. I think 2010 will be a year of discovery, a year of trial and error, a year of transition, and a year of growth. I welcome you all to be a part of this journey with me if you so choose.

well, I didn't win any BUT I found this exact pair on the Soft Moc website at a discounted cost! So...Mrs Clause (aka Mom) told me to order them and that her and Santa (aka Dad) will cover some of the cost. Woohoo! I had to wait a few days for them to arrive, and I saved shipping and handling by having them delivered to the Soft Moc store at the mall instead of to my address which would've ended up with me taking a trip to the mall anyway to the post office to get them. LOL. So I'm so happy. I still need to spray protect them before I wear them out anywhere but my feets are happy they have nice new non-leaking boots. :)

I wanted to take time though to share a couple pics. One is from the calendar hanging in my bedroom:

It reminds me to be thankful no matter what, in all circumstances, good and bad and to praise the Lord anyhow. But boy, oh boy, that sure isn't easy some days. Sometimes the best I can do is thank Him that I'm not where I was this time last year...but I still catch myself grumbling about how awful *this* (depression) feels. I'm trying to stay positive though.

The craft I mentioned is a really simple one. My sister used to make them and I used to be fascinated with them when I was little. They are Candy Cane Reindeer.

You can find a tutorial with a quick google search for candy cane reindeer or just click here. You'll see that I did the antlers different the pretty any of the tutorials you can find...but it's simple. Just put the pipe cleaner on the reindeer...make sure the candy cane is in the middle, then twist the pipe cleaner a couple times to make sure it will stay put and each "antler" around a pen and remove the pen. Also, a lot of tutorials recommend hot glue...I just use regular white glue. You do have to watch though...sometimes the eyes will start to slide or the nose will fall off. Once they've stayed put for about 30-60 seconds they usually are okay.

Hopefully that made a little sense but I'm thinking the picture should be fairly self explanatory. Sadly, this is one of the few things I'm managing to accomplish these days and at times it's even a struggle to do these but at least I'm working at it. That's more then I could say last year.

Supporting TWLOHA and a Celebration of Sorts

I know, at least I think, that in a past entry I mentioned my struggles with mental health, depression, crisis, suicidal thoughts, attempts, self harm...all that kind of heavy stuff that right now I'd rather shove under the blanket and not mention again...especially with the holidays coming up. However, knowing that the holidays are often the toughest time for people I think it's that much more important to bring these things into the open and talk about them.

There is a cause I want to help raise awareness of that helps people that struggle with some of the above issues and more...like addiction. You'll notice I added a little something to my left sidebar asking you to help me support To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA). Here is a copy of their mission statement copied and pasted directly from their site:

In my title for this entry I mentioned a celebration. You may be wondering what I meant by that. Well, I will be honest...I am celebrating because since April 2008 I have been keeping track of when I've cut. Yeah I know, gruesome topic, but so many do this and hide it that I want it to be in the open...I want their to be awareness.

Anyway, in that time I've had multiple "relapses" but today marks 157 days since the last time I cut and in my time of tracking this that is the longest I have gone so it is quite an accomplishment. Self harm is something that at one time had a lot of control over my life. I didn't know how to cope with emotion of any type, happy or sad, and as a side effect of that I would find ways to hurt myself. The smallest thing would upset me to tears, and it would be stupid really, but because of that emotion I thought I needed to be punished, I thought I should die but the only thing I could do was hurt myself. I have attempted suicide, I have been close to death, I've been told I shouldn't still be alive, but I AM. And while I still struggle it's not to the same degree it once was. So because of my experiences I want to make sure to raise as much awareness of these issues as possible and to make sure I support causes such as TWLOHA!

I want people to know that there is hope and that yes, the journey is painful, but it is worth it. Life is worth it, YOU are worth it! But it takes work, even when you feel like you have nothing left to give and for me it took prayer and acceptance that yes their is a God who cares but that some things happen to make us stronger and to prosper us. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

My celebration is just that, a celebration of life, of each day even if it is a struggle, a celebration that I can say it's been 157 since the last time I cut and nearly 11 months since the last time I needed to be in the hospital because of my depression. A celebration that with each time we awake we can start again. And even as I'm writing this I am struggling with another depressive episode but I can look back and acknowledge that progress has been made and that while the feelings I have right now are horribly uncomfortable they will pass in time.

2010 Olympic Torch in Halifax

I think it just took me over 30 minutes to figure out how to upload a video to youtube so that I can embed it here. Ah well, but I did it...I think.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay was in my city...right by my apartment building in fact. I didn't know this until moments before and in my excitement during the taking of the video I didn't realize how much I was shaking the camera around, but this was really neat to see in person. It's not everyday the Olympic Torch comes for a visit.

I watched most of the days events live online and couldn't seem to pry myself away from the computer long enough to get anything else accomplished but hey, it's only one day.

I finally got my computer back and it is all fixed up. Still trying to get it back the way I like it but right now I'm just glad it's back. Thank goodness it was still under warranty. I hope to get back to posting soon, but right now I can't even seem to stay caught up on reading blogs and emails. I don't know how you all do it. You may have (or not) noticed I had computer access while my computer was being repaired...but it just wasn't the same.

Operation Beautiful

I know I've been absent a lot lately, it's because my computer is still being repaired. I have had access to a computer so some of you may have noticed I'm still attempting to keep up on emails, facebook, and commenting on the occassional blog.

Today though, I really wanted to take the time to post about a site that I've been trying to check almost daily. I don't think I could even begin to express in words how much I love this site. It's called Operation Beautiful. I swear, every time I look through it at least one of the pictures or stories gets my eyes misty...but in a good way. It makes me feel happy and inspired and I just love the message that it spreads.

Have you come across any operation beautiful posts in your daily life? I haven't...yet. Have you posted any of your own out there for the world to see? Again, I haven't...yet. But I love the idea so much that one of these days I'm going to get a post-it notepad and start spreading the word about how beautiful you are!

Sorry to say I've been absent and likely will continue to be for awhile. I will post as I'm able over the next little bit but definitely not on a regular basis, nor will I be able to comment on other blogs with any regularity for a bit. My computer went caput and is in the shop....not sure how long, possibly a month or more. Hopefully my warrenty will cover everything. Anyway, until I have my laptop back I'll be accessing the internet through whoever is willing to let me use their computer...and mostly that will be to check email, however if I'm able to do more I will. I miss you all!

I just love this little guy and he's so well made...probably safe for most children. The only reason I am not saying definitely is I'm not sure how the eyes are attached, so without knowing I'd say 3 years and up.

I didn't write much earlier, instead I just posted my skirt pictures to conclude the challenge. I was, and still am, so behind in emails and blogs. I'm realizing though, as much as I want to be caught up...I've spent the day focusing on the wrong priorities. I feel a little guilty about this even though I did more today then I would've done on a typical day 2 months ago.

I really feel like I need a lady, a positive, encouraging lady, to take me under their wing and teach me about cooking and baking and housework. I need someone to help me out as if I was just a child learning...as that's basically what I am...except a little older. I let fear get in the way of me trying and experimenting with even the most basic of household tasks...but I know and desire to learn how to be a better housekeeper.

I want to prepare myself for when I have a family and be able to look after my husband, children, and house. I feel I missed out on many learning opportunities because of my past health...but things have changed and I'm doing so much better. I want to serve God, live for Him and please Him in all I do...but I keep getting stuck. That fear, it's something I think is holding me back from life. So instead, I fall back into a routine of computer surfing, and pretend all these things that I should be doing don't exist.

I want to start attending church again...I'm planning to go to one this weekend and am hoping it will be the right one for me.

I want to start planning out some meals...even if it's only one a week, or every other week for that matter. I want to get more done around the apartment. I want to learn to sew. I want...I want...I want...

Let me stop myself there. I need to ask what God wants...what do You want Lord? I want to serve You.

Onto today's challenge. Here's what I wore...

...my green skirt again...and a green long sleeve shirt with a flower pattern on it. It was a bit cooler today and since I had to get ready to go out I had to put on tights and a pair of socks since the tights are footless.

I just have to say that I had debated doing this challenge for a couple weeks before it started and I really felt that I was meant to take on the challenge, even if it was just for half the time. So much has been happening since this challenge started, some really amazing things. Some things are starting to make sense, other areas are improving, my perspective on things has changed, I am drawing closer in my walk with the Lord...there's just so much that words can't even explain...and too many things to just be coincidence. I'm really excited and a little bit scared to see what's in store this next little while...but mostly excited.

I'm going to have unreliable internet tomorrow and possibly the next day as I'll be at my parents house and my Aunts. Just wanted to say that since there will likely be a delay in me posted tomorrow's challenge photo's. There's so much I want to write but right now there are no words that will even come close to explaining things.

A Little Inspiration and Skirt Challenge Day 5

Endless opportunities to make a difference

That is what is on my calendar for the month of October. I saw it when I was trying to decide what shirt to put on with today's skirt. It got me thinking what can I do this month to make a difference? And a challenge to you, what can you do to make a difference? Just think about it, you don't have to tell me what, or if, you did anything...you don't have to blog about it, just think about it...and if there's anything you can do, no matter how small...do it! :) Something as small as smiling at a stranger, or holding a door open for someone, or anything at all really.

Onto today's skirt challenge. It's another day stuck at the apartment. We are having one heck of a stormy rainy day here so on leak patrol (this apartment leaks) and trying to continue tidying up. Oddly enough, one of the "side effects" of wearing a skirt every day has been that I've felt like doing more around the apartment...cleaning, tidying, and all that sort of domesticated stuff that I usually don't feel like doing. LOL.

Yup, that's my green skirt again...what can I say...it's comfy. :) And yes, I'm wearing a Grumpy Bear shirt...I kinda have this thing for Care Bears...lol. :)

Skirt Challenge, Day 4

I wasn't feeling all that great today so I just kept it a low key day and put on my favorite skirt...which we saw back on day 1.

Stayed around the apartment and got some things accomplished online that I've been needing to get done for a few days, as well as a few things around the apartment.

Oh...also remembered to take a pic of the slipper socks, which I was wearing again today.

Hoping tomorrow is a little more productive day but at least I got some things finished up today.

Skirt Challenge, Day 3; A Giveaway, and a New Look

Hello Readers :)

Today I put on a simple green skirt and just a regular black t-shirt. I'll be honest, since I was just planning on staying in the apartment today I went more for comfort then anything. It worked out well because I think for doing chore around the house I couldn't have been any more comfortable. Since it's cool here and we have hardwood floors I decided to put on my cute little slipper socks too. I wish I could say they are homemade but truth is they're store bought.

I just realized I didn't get a pic showing off the slipper socks. Ah well...maybe another day.

I've noticed that many of those doing the challenge are posting pictures of their hairstyles...and I must have missed that as being part of the challenge. I have short hair though and no real accessories so trust me, it would be pretty much the same each day. The only thing I can really do with it is tuck it behind my ears if I want. *shrugs* I'm also not comfortable with the idea yet of posting my full pic to my blog so I wouldn't really be able to share my hair very well anyway.

Skirt Challenge, Day 2 and Other Randomness

Day 2 was a little more challenging. Last night I tried on the skirt I was planning to wear today to make sure it fit....it...didn't. So tried another one...same problem. Guess that's what happens when you haven't worn them in a few years. It worked out, two skirts made their way in to my pile of donations and I found another one that fit and it was one I've been wanting to wear.

It was a little windy out today...so keeping the skirt down while walking outside was tricky but I survived and did most of the activities I would have anyway. My psychologist was surprised to see me dressed up and thought it was great.

Both days so far while I've been out I've been feeling a little more self-conscious but that's probably just because normally I'm in jeans. I think that will be less of an issue as time goes on. I do think it's kind of fun to put a little more effort into what I'm going to wear and it does make me feel different...in a good positive way...I don't know the word I'm looking for though.

In other news I recently contacted a local organization about volunteering and I heard back today and will have an interview on Oct 20th. The woman who does the interviewing is going on vacation for a bit otherwise it would've been sooner. That's fine though, gives me a chance to get some other things done. I'm also planning to attend a local photography club meeting next week. So there's a few new things going on in the next little while.

Skirt Challenge, Day 1

Today is day one of the challenge to wear a skirt or dress every day for one week. I decided to stick with one that I am super comfortable in for my first day, but added a pair of tights underneath as it's a little bit on the cool side today. I cropped out my head because I'm not overly comfortable right now with the idea of posting a full pic of me on my blog.

Please excuse the fact it looks like I have a tail...lol...I had a hard time trying to figure out where to position myself and the camera and this spot worked out the best overall for both.

I thought maybe if I was sitting I wouldn't feel so posed in the picture and could get a more natural picture. No such luck when I'm taking my own photo and on an auto timer...makes me all nervous and fidgety. I have never really been one to like getting my picture taken.

Above is the kitty necklace I decided to put on today. My aunt made it for me years ago out and I haven't worn it in awhile.

Looking forward to tomorrow...I wonder what I'll wear....and how I'll feel...

Another Day, Another Goal (Challenge)

While browsing through a blog by Practical Simplicity with an interesting challenge on it and after days of consideration I've decided to go ahead and accept the challenge.

This shall prove interesting with my track record of actually taking pictures and posting them here but I'm going to try.

What is this challenge, you ask? One week in skirts.

The challenge is to wear only skirts/dresses for an entire week (7 days.) Post some pictures on your blog and show us some of your outfits. If you don’t have exactly 7 different skirts, that’s alright. Mix and match with different shirts.

This will be interesting given the climate here is cool and lately very very very windy so there may be times that I will be forced into my regular day to day clothes but I'm hoping to participate at least 4 out of the 7 days. Or, alternatively, wear a skirt everyday for at least part of the day. We'll see how it goes.

On another note, I did get my hands on a copy of The Great Gatsby today. I ended up buying a brand new copy for less then $10 with the taxes in so I went with that option since the options didn't turn up any leads....and I much prefer new books to old ones...for reading.

I have many goals that I am working on but thought keeping track of some of them here may be kind of fun. Unplanned Coincidence

Okay, so I'll post a semi-normal entry. This is a photo I took while sitting on the plane waiting to take off on my trip to Ontario....I was just killing time while sitting there and snapping random pictures. Anyway, I didn't notice this until days later when I loaded the pictures onto a larger screen, and totally cracked up laughing....

...that's my suitcase! Not planned at all...totally awesome coincidence. I love when things work out like that....I know, I know...I'm very easily amused. :P

I'm officially home from vacation and from my friends wedding. I had such a great time and the wedding was beautiful. I believe in my last post I included a link with a few pictures...if you care to take a peak. The wedding had a Fall theme and every since I got to my friends place I've been wanting to change my blog layout to a Fall theme....hmmm...I wonder why.

Anyway, hopefully you can see the new look. I like it, however, is it sad to say I'm already looking forward to a new layout for Winter and for Christmas?! LOL.

I'm still behind on things and slowly getting caught up and trying to get the unpacking done and various things around the apartment and my city. My roommate had a nasty fall the other day down some hardwood stairs and is quite sore so I'm also trying to help out a little extra around here. Back injuries suck.

Also, while away, I decided to splurge and got a game for my Wii that I've wanted since way before I ever owned a Wii. Zelda: Twilight Princess, so needless to say I've been dedicating a little bit of time to play that as well.

My Best Friend's Wedding

I'm still on vacation for another day and a half but am sneaking online to update a little and share some of the wonderfulness of my best friend's wedding day. Since I was in the wedding party I wasn't able to take my own pictures but luckily the professional photographer has her own blog and has posted some of the pictures of the beautiful bride and her husband. I've been having a great time and enjoying my time here but I always do look forward to being back home. Nova Scotia, I believe, will always be my home. But I do love to travel and visit other places and hope to do much of it in the future.

Packing

Want the good news or the bad news? Hmm...I'll start with the bad. I'm not going to post any pics yet again, just don't have the time. The good news is, I'm almost done packing for my trip. I leave tonight to go to my parents and then tomorrow morning I leave for the airport. Yay! I'm not sure how much I'll be on over the next 2 weeks but I'll be on if I can. I'm going to miss you all.

Bad Blogger and randomness

I haven't been doing very good at keeping up on this blog regularly and to be honest, it'll be awhile before I am able to. Things have been going well, but I was away from reliable internet for a bit and now I'm super busy getting ready to go to Ontario for my friends wedding. I am in the wedding party so trying to get last minute things together and trying to figure out what I'm taking as well as trying to get the regular every day things done is proving challenging and exhausting.

I just got back to the city yesterday after visiting with my parents for a few days. It's always a shock to the system going from city to their place or from their place back to the city. They don't live in the country by any means but they do live in the sub-urbs of the city...and I just find it so quiet and peaceful when I'm there that all I want to do is lay around and sleep and just relax....and munch on all their yummy foods. Back in the city, it's noisy, really really noisy, so as much as I want to just lay around and sleep and just relax...it's not happening. Also, the food choices are limited in my wonderful little apartment. So anyway, needless to say, the change of pace changes dramatically.

So today, I have a psychology appointment, I need to go to the piercing shop to pick out a new barbell or something for my eyebrow piercing and to pick up a plastic one as well (just in case, I want some different options for the wedding). I also need to get more cleaning solution, yeah okay it's just purified water and sea salt but I'm hoping I can pick up another bottle from them so I don't have to buy the purified water and sea salts and make my own, just don't have time right now. Then I have to go to the stationary store (Duly Noted, I think it's called) to look for a few things, and then I need to pick up some eyeshadow and eyeliner and different things. Tonight I'm hanging out with my roommate watching a movie and enjoying some wine.

Tomorrow is another appointment with my Occupational Therapist and any other running around I didn't get done today. Plus I need to try to clear off my camera's memory stick and reformat it so I won't have to buy a new one for taking on my trip. Money, money, money! Ack! Oh plus I need to get to the bank to pick up money for bills to give to my roommate and money that I owe my neighbor for a Mary Kay order I put in. And a few other odds and ends if I don't forget.

So, that said, I'm off. Just gotta finish my box of Lychee juice and then brush the old teefers (teeth) and get moving. I'll try to write another blog and show some pictures of some neat things before I go.

Storm update and another Giveaway

Well, Hurricane Bill was quite the let-down but I suppose that's a good thing. Hurricane season is just beginning and there's already another major storm (Danny) in the forecast for this coming weekend. Mostly Bill was just a bunch of wind and rain, no major damage, no real news to report on that.

Hurricane Bill

So it looks like potentially we could be in for quite a storm here in Nova Scotia, Canada. Some say it will hit us straight on, others say it will miss us and we'll just see a lot of rain and wind. What will really happen is yet to be seen...but just in case we're without power I thought I'd better write a quick entry. I'm really not all that worried however the last comparable hurricane we had was Hurricane Juan and it wrecked havok around here and shut the city down for days so I guess we'll just have to wait see.

Watermark Woes

I finally managed to create something I am happy enough to use as a watermark for now, however...I'm having some transparency issues. I can't figure out where I'm going wrong. I've followed tutorials for the program I am using, currently a demo of Corel Paint Shop Pro because I'm semi familiar with the program as I've used a different version in the past. Watermarks have always tripped me up...every single time.

This time I did manage to get it so that I don't mind using it...but it still needs work.

Anyway, here is what I have, I'm using it on an image that I posted a few days ago of my beloved Chloe. If you know anything about watermarks I'm sure you'll see my problem (bottom right corner).

I would rather not have that square. It didn't seem to matter what I did by the time I'd have to save the watermark image it would mysteriously appear again. So frustrating.

This is a song I only found about either last fall or this past winter, I can't quite remember. It means a lot to me. It partially played a role in my blogging name, or well, to be honest...the "found" part of my blogger name. I've very much been the "Prodigal Daughter" in my journey called life.

I've struggled with depression and anxiety since childhood. During my teenage years it became severe and by the time I was 19 I was in and out of hospital frequently. Partially because of my despair and extremely intense suicidal thoughts I behaved recklessly. I often took life-threatening overdoses and engaged in other self-harmful behavior. I pulled away from many people except for a few close friends, I would cut myself on a regular basis, I experimented with drugs and alcohol, I had run-in's with the police, and various other problems. I'm happy to say most of that is in the past, thanks to therapy, the right medications, a lot of hard work, and deciding finally that I want to follow my Lord and Savior. I, however, will be the first to admit my relationship with the Lord is nowhere near where it should be and I still make poor choices and have crap days. Afterall, I am human. It's been less then 2 months since the last time I engaged in cutting. Choosing to live God's way doesn't automatically make things easier...in fact...often things get harder. It just changes your perspective and outlook.

The last month or so has been the best I've felt in years! Yes, years! And it was earlier this year I made my mind up that yes, God was going to be a part of my life. And for the first time in years I am actually happy that I'm alive and looking forward to things.

Going back in time a few years, uh...okay...back to the teenage years...when I started to really struggle. Well, I probably first started struggling before I was a teenage, while I was still in elementary school. Around 14 I tried to drop out of school, I got involved in mild drugs and drinking, I got caught shoplifting, I was angry often and would fight with any one close to me. I'd kick holes in the walls, baracade myself in my room or the washroom for hours on end. I would take whatever pills I could get my hands on in the hopes of having a break from the pain I felt inside. Thankfully I got caught doing many of those things early on and so started my experiences with therapy. High school was much the same...except that if I went to school I would spend more time in the office because I would get so anxious about going to classes that I couldn't go.

I did take a year off of school after I graduated from grade 12 and then did a one year program at a private college. I struggled through it but managed to stick it out until I graduated. Got a good job...and things really started going downhill from there. While I'll never take back my work experience, working in the Emergency Room definitely took it's tole on me. I was so scared of what I might face at work that I started missing shifts, I started taking extreme overdoses, because in my head it made more sense to take an overdose to avoid going to work then to quit. I became very ill, doctors and nurses still tell me I shouldn't still be alive. Especially with no major damage. I also developed a life threatening allergic reaction to one of the medications that is used to conteract the medication I often took. It wasn't that I was looking for attention, it was just that I didn't know how else to escape the turmoil I felt inside. I would often be discharged and then be hospitalized again within 48 hours.

My parents finally made an ultimatum. If I took another overdose, if the paramedics had to take me to the hospital again, then I was no longer aloud to live at home. My behavior at home was out of control anyway...I am horrified that I acted the way I did towards my parents. When I was 19 I was officially kicked out. I didn't know how to stop my behavior...it was how I coped. I ended up living in homeless shelters for a few months before eventually getting a place on my own with a roommate. That was back in 2003.

The problems didn't end there. I was still often in and out of hospital. I still struggled with overdosing and self harm and would regularly have the police on wild-chases through the night and eventually they'd get me and take me to the hospital. I can't even imagine being that way now. I ended up off work on disability in 2006 and have been ever since. I'm hoping in the first half of next year I'll be able to return to work somewhere. I am in the process now of setting up some hours volunteering at a local Salvation Army Thrift Store.

The last real bad spell was only this past fall and winter. It started last spring or summer but by the fall it was out of control and meds were not helping. So things were really rocky again and there were some close calls. The differences was that I knew when to get help. The problems were exhaserbated by the trial and error of medications (and being on and off the various ones) and trying to find one that worked without severe side effects. Finally this past January, around the time of my last hospital admission I was started on a med that has helped. The dose has had to be tweaked a few times but it has made a huge difference. I have physical problems (not related to my behaviors) that made the trial and error a little more difficult because it eliminated a large group of medications that would normally have been used. Also, over the last few admissions I had too many things happen to simply be coincidence. Things I can't explain but proved to me that yes there is a God and I needed to make a choice whether I was going to let Him into my life or shut Him out. Well seeing as I wasn't liking how things were going without Him in my life I knew what decision I had to make. It was not an easy choice for me. I'm stubborn, I want to do things my way on my timeline...but that's not how it's to be, although it still does happen.

So...that there is a bit of my history from the mental health side of things. I mentioned there are physical issues as well which actually play a role in the mental health part of things but I will save that for another day.

I've chosen not to write my diagnosis in this blog entry but if you're curious (or nosey) don't hesitate to ask. I don't hide it. It is a part of who I am but it is not who I am. If that makes any sense. Oddly enough, as much as I'd like to be able to say that I didn't go through those things, I'm thankful for the experiences. I've met some really interesting people because of what I've been through and I've learned a lot along the way and I now like the person I am turning out to be. Without my experiences I may not be able to say that.

Cutest Cat Photo Contest

I may be a little biased but I do tend to think my dear kitty Chloe is the "Cutest Cat". I loves her, even if I don't get to see her much. Every day I call my mom (Chloe's "slave") to find out how Chloe is doing and to see if Chloe wants to "talk". Yes I seriously do, no joke. Mom has a range of tricks up her sleeve that can often get Chloe to meow a few words, or at the very least purr loud enough for the phone to pic it up. Some of the tricks aside from the obvious of offering her kitty treats or her favorite of grass, lettuce, or spinach, are reading out loud (she especially likes the bible), saying the Lord's prayer out loud, or just simply saying "s's" out loud. S, s, ess, S, Chloe ssss. LOL. She's so funny.

Anyway, through facebook I found out about a contest taking place through The Animal Rescue Site's facebook page and naturally I had to enter.

Just an Update on My Life's Journey

I know none of you know my history yet, or at least not much of it...but I'm going to copy and paste something I wrote tonight in another forum that has been following me for months. It's an update to let them know how I'm doing. I will take out a few parts that don't apply to here but otherwise leave it intact, if you see anything in a [ ] it will be something I added specifically for here.

Hi, just thought I'd drop in and say hi. I've been doing really well the last little while, Praise God, probably the best I have in years (10+ years)...not saying I'm not going to have struggles anymore but saying that the Lord is really blessing me this summer with a new outlook, increasing abilities and energy, increasing interest, motivation and I'm excited, truly excited, to be able to be enjoying things.

My relationship with the Lord is still a work in progress, and always will be...as is any relationship. My relationship with the Lord is similar to many human relationships I have in the fact that in most cases I will be all out and doing everything I can and trying to spend all this time with the individual, and then I get overwhelmed and pull away. I'm working on this with His help and I know He's with me every step of the way on this journey...and a journey it sure is. It's just going to take time but I'm on the right path right now I think.

I'm not on the computer nearly so much anymore and am having a bit of a challenge learning to balance getting things done in the day with computer time and household responsibilities so until I get it figured out a little better I won't be around much at all. [I do plan to continue blogging, just not sure what direction it's going to take yet.]

The computer was a blessing for me for a season but now it's time to transition and change and focus on other things. But being able to have my various internet friends over the last 10+ years has been a huge blessing and encouragement (and at times a source of frustration but we won't focus on that) and also a distraction from all the pain and things I wasn't ready to learn how to deal with. [I look forward to many more years with internet friends, just in balance now with everyday living and adventures.]

I'm kind of rambling a bit...I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I'm just really excited to see what going to happen over the next few weeks as the transition continues...what does the Lord have in store for me?! I have some ideas, but only He really knows and it will all be revealed in His perfect timing.

Oh...I saw the most amazing rainbow tonight! I didn't know what my friend who I share an apartment with was so excited over and then looked out the window! Wow! The brightest, biggest, fullest rainbow either of us has ever seen. We could see from end to end. God knew we both needed to see that today, for different reasons, His promise. I believe good things are ahead.

On another note, I am feeling compelled to write an entry soon with a bit of "my story". I haven't quite figured out how to go about it yet. I don't want it to be too heavy, and I don't want it to drag on, but I feel like it's meant for me to share a little about who I am now and what the journey of life has entailed for me so far. So, I'm going to work on that over the next little bit. Maybe for some it will be an inspiration, maybe for others it will be a turn-off and you'll never want to look at my blog again. Whatever. Watermark Help

Hello fellow Bloggers...I have a question for you.

Is there anyone out there who knows what they're doing when creating watermarks for photo's? I can do text no problem, what I'm thinking is some people have cute little images as part of their watermark. For the life of me I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work. So my question, or questions, are these:

I currently only use Gimp and Picasa since they're freeware, someday I'll have photoshop but not yet. Does anyone have a fairly straightforward tutorial on how to make a watermark with an image in either of these programs (Gimp or Picasa)?

Or

Does anyone have any interest, if it isn't too hard or a problem, in creating a cool little watermark for me to use? I'd kind of like something with some simple little stars or something, at least that's what I keep picturing. As for the text with it there are 2 things I want included..."Ello" and below that on a seperate line "FPD". No quotation marks though.

I don't want anyone to go out of there way, just this whole watermark issue is part of what is holding me back from sharing my photo's. And I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure it out. I would love to know how, really I would. So if you have a tutorial that would work with either program that's really preferable but I'd be eternally grateful if someone made one as well or could at least get me going in the right direction.
